What exactly is mesothelioma? It is a form of cancer which is malignant (caused by exposure to asbestos) and it develops in the protective membrane that covers most of our body’s internal organs — the mesothelium. Mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium that causes the cells to become abnormal and divide out of control until they can damage nearby organs and tissues. This condition usually begins in the lungs or walls of the chest cavity, or in the organs of the abdominal cavity. When mesothelioma effects the lungs, the symptoms may vary from shortness of breath to chest pain and beyond. When it effects the abdominal area, there can be pain and swelling, weight loss or anemia. Among other things, it creates a buildup of fluids in the body. Generally speaking, a biopsy is required to confirm the presence of mesothelioma.
Daily, I see television commercials from the I.M. Richer & U.R. Poorer law firm, encouraging people that have mesothelioma, or think there is a possibility that they could have mesothelioma, or know someone who knows someone who can even spell mesothelioma, to call them and let them file a claim on their behalf in order for them to be compensated for their condition. Honestly, unless you know a lot about law or a lot about insurance, it behooves you to do just that — call an attorney that specializes in asbestos-related conditions. Even with group health insurance coverage, the costs rise up to astronomical levels.
Usually people who develop mesothelioma have worked in jobs where they are exposed to asbestos and asbestos products. Asbestos has been being mined and milled and produced commercially since early 1900s for sure, probably longer. Typically, it is used in the development of such commercially used building products such as roofing materials, insulation, flooring materials but also even in brake linings and literally dozens of other products. In early years, the dangers of working with asbestos were not known because it can take thirty or forty years for the symptoms to appear and the symptoms are very similar to a great number of other conditions. Now, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has set limits for acceptable levels of exposure to asbestos in workplaces and demands that people who work around asbestos wear personal protective gear in order to lower their risk to exposure.
Exposure to asbestos is definitely dangerous and the health conditions that can develop years and years later are also very dangerous. If, based on your work history, you suspect that you have or could develop mesothelioma or any other asbestos-related condition, get it checked out by a doctor who specializes in cancer. Then, should you deem it prudent, find yourself an attorney who specializes in this area also.
