Exposure to asbestos has been known to create dangerous health conditions such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. Although these conditions are rare, they are considered very serious medical conditions which can progress in range from disability to death.
Asbestosis can create a buildup of scar-like tissue in the lungs causing among other things, pain and a severe shortness of breath. Mesothelioma on the other hand, is a form of cancer in which malignant cells develop out of control in the mesothelium (the protective lining on most of our body’s internal organs) creating a buildup of fluids around the lungs or other internal organs and causing damage to tissue and other nearby organs. The prognosis of surviving mesothelioma is not good.
Asbestos has been being used commercially for over a hundred years, however, it may take anywhere from thirty to fifty years for symptoms of diseases related to asbestos exposure to surface.
Today, there are laws to protect workers in fields where asbestos and asbestos products are being used (i.e., shipyards, insulation manufacturing/installation, roofing and building material manufacturing/installation, floor coverings, brake linings and many more). Exposure is limited now because protective equipment and gear are required when working in and around asbestos products. Employers must not only provide protective work gear in all circumstances, they must also provide asbestos awareness and thorough training to their employees.
If you believe you are at risk of developing any condition because of exposure to asbestos, seek medical advice. Early diagnosis and treatment are always your best bet. Keep in mind though that the symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are very similar to many other diseases and can be difficult to diagnose. Find a doctor that specializes in this area.
If in fact, you have developed a health condition due to asbestos exposure, you may want to retain an attorney to proceed legally on your behalf. There are law firms by the hundreds that specialize in asbestos-related claims and most of them offer free consultations and will not charge you unless they can recover monies on your behalf.
